So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

How to draw the structure of a hand (Steps):

  1. Draw the palm
  2. Draw circles (four for fingers and one for thumb)
  3. Measure the fingers
  4. Draw fingers
  5. Joints of fingers
  6. Draw circles at each joint
  7. Measure and draw the thumb
  8. Make outlines
  9. Shading the outline

Step 1

Shape the palm:

Shape the palm

Use your 2HB pencil to shape the palm. First, draw a rectangle and then draw a slop on the top of the left corner. Make the slop of the right corner down as compared to the left one, as shown in the picture.

Step 2

Draw circles (four for fingers and one for thumb)

circles drawing

Draw four circles on the top of the slop drawn in the first step. Make sure these four circles contain equal spacing among them. Now draw another one on the vertical side of the rectangle. That 5th circle will be located on the bottom at the left vertical line for the thumb. The 5th circle should be 4\5th of the total length on the side of a rectangle. You may use your measuring scale for taking measurements correctly.

Step 3

 Measure the fingers

fingers measurement

The dotted line shows the maximum length of the middle finger. If you want to measure the middle finger length, measure the length from wrist to knuckles. Use your middle finger as a reference because it is the longest one, and we can use it to find the length of the other three fingers.

fingers measurement (2)

To measure the length of the other three fingers, draw another curved line or slop on the top of the curve by keeping the length ½ and matching that curve to each circle by drawing three lines,

Step 4

Joints of fingers:

Joints of fingers in hand poses drawing

It’s time to find the joints of each finger by adding two ticks on the drawn line of the middle finger. These two ticks are roughly one-quarter of the way.

Joints of fingers in hand poses drawing (2)

Draw two more similar curves or slops according to the ticks of the middle finger. Length should be the same as taking in the above steps.

Step 5

Draw circles at each joint:

circles drawing at each joint in hand poses drawing

Draw circles at each joint, and the size should be medium to large. The size of circles varies from top to bottom and shows the structure of hand joints. These two more circles will be drawn on the two middle curved lines.

Step 6

Measure and draw the thumb:

Measure and draw the thumb

To measure the length of the thumb, draw a curved line. That curved line will start from the bottom part of the thumb, where we have drawn a circle. The length of the thumb varies from person to person to fingers.

Measure and draw the thumb (2)

Draw two more circles on the curved line of the thumb. The measurements should be 1\2 of the total length of the thumb and between these circles.

Step 7

Outlining the hand:

Outlining the hand

Make outlines around the fingers, thumb, and palm. To make a fatty or chubby hand increase the fat between fingers and thumb joints. But if you want to draw a skinny hand, you can decrease the fat among the joints. Now you understand the whole structure of a hand. It will allow you to draw hand poses easily and step by step.
