Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing an Anime Tongue Out Face
Contents
This tutorial shows how to draw an anime tongue-out face character with four different facial expressions sticking out their tongues.
These expressions are frequently found in lighter anime, like comedies and slice-of-life series. Character designs for these programs can also be significantly more stylized (less serious).
In addition, the female in the examples will be drawn in a more stylized manner than some of the other examples on AnimeOutline. As a result, some of the dimensions will alter somewhat from those in previous lessons.
The following are the four distinct expressions demonstrated in this tutorial:
- Focused/Sly Look
- Upset Teasing
- Playful Teasing
- Open Mouth Tongue Out
Because you’ll need to delete areas of the head after adding the hair, start the instruction with a pencil and make light lines. By drawing over your lines afterward, you may darken them.
How to Draw Anime Expressions with a Focused/Sly Tongue Out
The tongue is pointing upwards and to one side of the mouth in this first expression. It may be used to depict a character’s “sly” or “creative” countenance while concentrating on something like writing or sketching.
Step 1: Draw the Facial Features’ Outlines
As seen above, draw the head and the proportions of the face. We won’t go into great depth sketching each of the facial features because this course focuses on capturing the overall expressions that show the tongue.
Draw one eye mildly squinted and the other closed for this look. Next, draw the brows with the one over the open eye in a natural condition and the one above the closed eye a little lower down in a “wave” form. Finally, draw a smiley face with a bigger mouth on the side where the tongue protrudes.
It’s worth noting that, while technically speaking, you must always open your lips to push your tongue out; these are stylized anime characters. This means that if the mouth is slightly open, the jaw can be drawn in the same position as closed.
Step 2 – Place the Ears
Place the ears as indicated in the illustration.
Step 3 – Clean up the Drawing
After you’ve completed the basic contours of the face features, you should have a sketch that looks like the one above.
Step 4 – Add the Small Details
Fill in the tiny elements of the face. The inner portions of the eye and a hint of the eyelids will be seen in this situation (added between the eyes and the eyebrows).
There’s no need to design any of the inner intricacies of the ears because the hair would nearly completely hide them.
Step 5 – Draw the Hair
Fill up the top of the head with hair. Splitting the hair into three sections is the approach used to draw it. In the image above, the front, sides, and back/top are all colored differently.
Begin with the front, then the sides, and lastly, the back/top.
Step 6 – Finish the Drawing
You can delete any sections of the head obscured by the hair once you’ve finished the line drawing. You may also use a darker pencil stroke or a black pen/marker to draw over your lines.
After that, use a black or extremely dark pencil to shade in the brows, eyelashes, eye contour, and pupil. As you shade, add a trace of individual lashes to the eyelashes. Darken the hair, open eye, and tongue after that. Make the inner portion of the hair and the top area of the eye a shade darker than the rest.
How to Draw an Anime Expression with an Upset Teasing Tongue Out
This is a teasing face with an unhappy/upset look.
Step 1: Draw the Facial Features’ Outline
Drawing proportions of an anime female with her tongue out, furious and mocking.
As seen above, draw the head and place the facial characteristics. For further information on sketching the specific face characteristics, go to the links in the first example.
Draw both eyes together with the brows down and in “wave-like” forms for this look.
Draw a frown with the tongue hanging down downwards in an upside-down curve (opposite a grin).
Step 2: Position the Ears
As illustrated in the illustration, add the ears.
Step 3: Organize Your Drawing
After you’ve finished adding the facial characteristics, make sure you have a clean outline drawing like the one shown above before continuing to the next phase.
Step 4: Add the Finishing Touches
Add the tiny elements to the face, such as a suggestion of the eyelids and a split in the tongue in this example.
Step 5 – Create the Hairstyle
As illustrated above, add the hair to the top of the head. Draw the front part (red), then the sides (green), and lastly, the top/back section (blue) (blue).
More information on sketching it may be found in the tutorial mentioned in the first example.
Step 6: Complete the Drawing
Delete the hair-covered areas of the head. Then, using a darker pencil stroke or a black pen/marker, trace over your lines to deepen them. After that, use black to fill in the lashes and brows (or dark pencil shading). While applying the black fill/dark shading, you may also add hints of the individual eyelashes. Shade in the mouth and hair to complete the picture.

Step 1: Draw the Facial Features’ Outlines
As illustrated in the illustration, draw the head and proportion the face. If you need additional information on sketching other anime facial traits, go back to the links in the first example of the instruction.
Close your eyes and lift your brows for this look. Next, draw a mouth with a wave-like form (resembling a cat’s mouth).
Step 2: Position the Ears
Place the ears as indicated in the illustration.
Step 3: Organize Your Drawing
Before going on to the following phase, make sure you have a neat and clear sketch, such as the one seen above.
Step 4: Add the Finishing Touches
Add some of the face’s minor elements, such as a hint of the eyelids and the tongue’s split.
Step 5 – Create the Hairstyle
Draw the hair in the manner shown in the example. Begin with the front (red), then the sides (green), and finally the top/back (blue).
For further information on how to draw it, go back to the original example’s link.
Step 6 – Finish the Drawing
Eraser and darken the portions of the head covered by the hair with a deeper pencil stroke or a black pen/marker.
Fill in the lashes and brows with a black or dark pencil shading, highlighting the individual lashes as you go.
Finally, add some shading to the mouth and hair. Make the inner/bottom section of the hair a shade darker than the rest of the hair.
How to Draw Open Mouth Tongue Out Anime Expression
To be more specific, this is more of a character just opening their lips and sticking their tongue out than an “expression.”
Step 1: Draw the Facial Features’ Outlines
As illustrated above, add the face traits.
You’ll note that the jaw is drawn a little lower in this image since the mouth is open wider than in the others.
In comparison to a typical, draw the eyes with their bottom eyelids slightly lifted. Draw the brows in a relaxed/natural condition.
Make a wide-open mouth with the tongue protruding downwards. To provide a sense of the top row of teeth, draw a little curve in the upper section of the mouth.
Step 2 – Place the Ears
Assemble the ears as indicated.
Step 3 – Clean up the Drawing
Once you’ve finished sketching the head and putting the facial characteristics, check to see whether your design looks anything like the examples above before moving on to the next stage.
Step 4 – Add the Small Details
Add a hint of the eyelids between the brows and the inner features of the eyes. You may also draw a thin line to illustrate the tongue split.
Step 5 – Draw the Hair
As illustrated in the illustration, add hair to the top of the head. You may redraw it starting with the front (red), then the sides (green), and lastly, the top/back (blue).
Step 6 – Finish the Drawing
To finalize the picture, erase the hair-covered areas of the head. Then, using either black or extremely dark pencil shading, deepen your lines by tracing over them and filling in the brows, eyelashes, outlines of the eyes, and pupils. Additionally, you may shade in the mouth, tongue, and hair.
Shade the inner/bottom area of the hair darker than the rest and shade the open lips darker than the tongue.
Conclusion
In anime and manga, a character putting their tongue out might assist in highlighting certain expressions. With a few different examples, this tutorial looked at drawing them.
